This data processing startup was spun out of research at MIT a few years ago. They have great technology involving machine learning and massive scaled distributed data, as well as already boasting a lot of customer traction and some marquee customers.

There are about 30 people in engineering now, divided into 3 cross functional teams. As they've grown, they're now looking for a Software Engineering Manager to lead one of these teams. All the development is in Java.

You'll be a good fit if you still write lots of backend code in Java for enterprise software (distributed systems experience would be a great fit), and also have some experience leading a small team (2-5 people). The head of product development would possibly also consider a smart developer looking to get their first management/lead position. Strong academic grounding in Computer Science would also be important here.

I’m Phil Hurd, the principal of Oculus Search Partners. Software professionals have trusted me as their recruiting partner for 30 years because:

  • Expertise. I earned both a BSEE/MSEE, and was a computer engineer before becoming a search and placement professional. You’ll be represented by someone who understands what you do, and knows how to leverage that understanding to create opportunities for you.

  • Reputation. Over 70 LinkedIn recommendations attest to my integrity and effectiveness.

  • Network. I have personally placed, or been involved with placing, several thousand software professionals over my career, and have built a deep network with VPE’s, CEO’s, HR, etc. I can not only open doors for you, but can help you improve your resume, prepare you for interviews, and help you negotiate a strong offer package.

  • No BS. I don’t like when a salesperson pressures me, and I’m sure you don’t want that from a recruiter. You’re a professional, so am I, and my approach reflects that philosophy. And specifically, I will NEVER submit your resume to any company without prior discussion and buy-in from you.

  • Respect. I never forget that this is your job search, and your life, and our interactions will reflect that philosophy.
