Hub Technology Group has been engaged by one of the fastest growing insurance companies in the country to help identify their first commercial underwriter.  We’re searching for a motivated and enthusiastic individual interested in building out the newly formed commercial underwriting group.  As a division of the product team, the commercial underwriting group will help deliver the innovative combination of technology and insurance services. As part of a newly formed product team, candidates will build and grow the commercial underwriting team. The focus will initially be to develop and implement programs to serve the small business marketplace.  Working closely with the software development team, you design and create innovative ways to deliver amazing insurance buying experiences.  As part of a growing, dynamic company candidates will have the opportunity to work cross functionally, juggling various priorities and helping with a variety of tasks. On a regular basis the underwriter will  assist clients with insurance related programs,  work with (re)insurance companies and claims handlers as well as assist  with systems implementations and various other interesting projects.
 
Phase 1 (Immediate responsibilities):
  • Help design and build a profitable commercial underwriting practice.  
  • Work with company leadership to development and implementation underwriting guidelines, policies and procedures
  • Develop pricing in accordance with risk analysis and company filings
  • Underwriting new and renewal business, ensuring appropriate pricing  to ensure a profitable book
  • Review certificates of insurance for accuracy, noting deficiencies and requesting revisions as necessary
  • Approve or decline endorsement requests according to internal and company guidelines
  • Ensure products are compliant with existing rules, regulations, and company filings
  • Travel to retail agent’s office and service center as required
  • Participate in claims review meetings as necessary and assess claim trends
  • Assessing the key risk details needed for pricing a risk to ensure a minimalistic and streamlined customer quoting experience
 
Phase 2 (in 8 -12 months):
  • Work with Program and Product Managers to develop a strategy for the rolling out of current and additional products in new markets
  • Monitor the actions of competitors and rating bureaus that impact our insurance operations
  • Evaluate business results and market trends to improve product profitability\
  • Review profitability drivers on a state-by-state basis and adjust product guidelines and pricing accordingly
  • Identify areas of opportunity to improve growth, profit, and diversification
 
SUGGESTED EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree or appropriate insurance designation required
  • Industry knowledge and experience including workers compensation, commercial multi-line underwriting and ratings
  •  5+ years of commercial underwriting experience with 2 years of Worker’s Compensation underwriting
  • Demonstrated skill in risk analysis, negotiation, loss models, and proposing terms and pricing.
  • Maintain necessary licenses to produce business
  • Recognize new trends and developments to the insurance industry and be able to incorporate into strategies
  • Ability to understand and analyze necessary components of insurance policies and understand client’s needs and their risk profiles
  • Ability to develop, grow and maintain an excellent working relationships with strong collaboration and leadership skills.
  • Strong analysis skills and working knowledge of associated tools including SQL, SAS or other
